George E. Sims Nursing Scholarship | Board of Trustees Scholarship

George E. Sims Nursing Scholarship

The George E. Sims Nursing Scholarship is awarded each year to nursing students. The purpose of the scholarship, which is funded by the Fuller E. Callaway Foundation, is two-fold. First, it is intended to assist individuals in attaining careers as registered nurses. Second, it enables West Georgia Health System to maintain the highest quality of care by having well educated and professional nurses on staff. Awarding of the scholarships is based on the applicant's scholastic record, character, leadership qualities, participation in student and community activities, and personal interviews. The scholarships include all costs associated with fulfilling the requirements of a nursing degree. In return, the recipients agree to work at West Georgia Health System for one to two years after they graduate, depending upon the duration of the scholarship.

The WGHS Board of Trustees Scholarship

The West Georgia Health System Board of Trustees established a scholarship fund in 1988 to assist the Health System in securing highly qualified medical professionals. These scholarships are available to students pursuing medical professions in the areas of laboratory science, pharmacy, physical therapy, pulmonary medicine, and radiology.

Scholarship awards are based on several factors, including scholastic record, work history, interview, recommendations from accredited schools, and anticipated staffing needs of WGHS. Each scholarship recipient must be enrolled as a full-time student during the award period. The amount of the award, which is determined by the board’s scholarship committee, may include tuition, room and board, books, uniforms and lab fees.

Upon completion of the chosen program, the student will work at West Georgia Health System for one calendar year for each school year the scholarship was received. Students who do not fulfill the work obligation must repay the full amount paid on their behalf.  This amount will include 8.5 percent interest on the total scholarship and will be due immediately.

The scholarship committee reserves the right to approve any additional scholarships, grants or loans that the student receives to ensure that there are no work-related guarantees associated with the additional funds.

To apply for the WGHS Board of Trustees Scholarship, please send a request for an application and  include a letter of acceptance into the desired program of study from an accredited school, college, or university. Letters should be sent to:
