Foster
Grandparent Program
“Bridging the Generations of
Need”
Beginning in 1965 as a national demonstration effort,
this program came to West Georgia Health System in 1989.
The Foster Grandparent program is a nationally recognized
intergenerational program linking seniors with special
needs children.
The program is funded by the Corporation for National
Service and sponsored by West Georgia Health System and
United Way of West Georgia.
Foster Grandparent volunteers must be at least 60 years
of age, low income, no longer in the regular workforce,
capable of serving children with exceptional or special
needs, and willing to volunteer four hours per day, five
days per week. Handicapped persons are welcome to serve.
Foster Grandparent volunteers receive a modest tax-free
stipend to cover the cost of volunteering – transportation
and meal assistance, accident and liability insurance,
uniform, and an annual physical exam.
Foster Grandparent volunteers make a difference by:
- Reading
with children
- Working one-on-one with learning disabled
children
- Listening
- Assisting with handicapped children
- Providing encouragement
- Sharing their values
- Providing lots of love
