CARE
LINK / AmeriCorps / Faith in Action Program
In 1995, West Georgia Health
System launched its Care Link AmeriCorps program, which now
serves as a model program for community hospitals and health
systems across the United States. In exchange for a year
of community service, AmeriCorps members receive a living
allowance and an educational award from the Corporation for
National Service.
Care Link expanded its volunteer program with the Robert
Wood Johnson Faith in Action Grant in October 2003. As
a new grantee, Care Link is now a part of a national
network of more than 1,000 interfaith volunteer caregiving
programs working together to help our neighbors maintain
their independence.
Through the Care Link program, AmeriCorps members and
volunteers provide in-home companionship and assistance
to the frail elderly, enriching their lives and significantly
reducing the costs of hospital and nursing home care.
AmeriCorps members and volunteers help the elderly citizens
they serve with medical maintenance needs such as transportation
assistance to their medical appointments and getting
their prescriptions filled.
Care Link serves more than 250 clients in the Troup County
area. Registered nurses provide the initial assessment,
and act as the link between the clients and the community’s
health and human services resources.
